Talking to the Person in the Mirror
I wrote a few days ago about reading Brené Brown's "The Gifts of Imperfection." In two lovely sentences, she gives her thesis:
"Whole hearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. It’s about cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think,
No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.”
I wonder how many of us who read this feel as if a gong has been struck in our chests. What would it be like to live consistently as if, no matter what, we were enough? We had always been enough, and would always be enough in the future. If we truly believed that, wouldn't many of our anxieties disappear? We have so many issues with being good enough. Am I actually good enough? Do people know I'm good enough? Is there anyone who questions whether I'm good enough? Is there anyone who is better than me?...this could go on and on.
Our challenge is to notice the moments when we start to feel insecure and shaky, defensive or aggressive, put off balance by something that life has thrown at us. In these moments, can we try to whisper, I am enough instead of What if I can't do this?
Here's something practical to try, if you don't mind feeling somewhat goofy: today, every time you pass a mirror (so maybe every time you wash your hands after using the restroom?) look yourself in the eyes and say (out loud or in your head) I am enough. Or say another phrase that feels powerful to you. Notice if there is any effect after a day of this. I find that it can help me stay calmer and more positive throughout a stressful day.
